Image is a BWA logo with the statement that BWA was established in 1975, to help women become free from violence and abuse.

BWA is a member of the Women's Aid Federation of England, and is part of the national refuge system.

We acknowledge a responsibility to work with others to stop domestic violence.

BWA has good working relationships with the Police, Social Services and Housing Departments as well as other voluntary agencies.

In order to ensure widespread understanding of the reality of domestic violence, BWA accepts invitations to speak about its work and provide training for others, including, church groups, Social Services, the Samaritans, The Women's Information Centre, Relate, police cadets and others. There has also been media coverage in newspapers, on radio and television.

BWA is involved in Domestic Violence Forums in the area, and set up the Reading Domestic Violence Forum in partnership with Social Services. Meetings have themes such as, Changes to the Health Service and the Experience of Black Women. Around 100 local organisations are members, and together they have compiled Good Practice Guidelines, and a Domestic Violence Strategy for Reading. This has a three pronged approach being, improved inter agency working, working with young people and abusers to prevent violence, and working towards a local campaign saying "no" to violence at home. This has resulted in Reading Borough Council and other organisations making a pledge this year, to protect victims, provide support and prevent abuse.
